Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has been hit by what Elon Musk has described as a “massive cyber attack”, leaving tens of thousands of users unable to access their accounts throughout Monday.
More than 40,000 users reported login issues, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com, with reports peaking in the afternoon as X suffered widespread service disruption across the UK and globally.
Taking to his own platform, Elon Musk, CEO of X, confirmed the cyber incident, saying the scale of the attack suggested involvement from a highly coordinated group or even a nation-state.
“There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X,” Musk wrote. “We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing…”
Disruption Hits Global Users
Users across multiple countries reported being unable to log in, access their feeds, or post content. Some also noted delayed notifications, timeline errors, and failure to load media on the platform.
While intermittent service has resumed for some, X has not confirmed when full functionality will be restored.
No Immediate Attribution
Details about the origin of the cyber attack remain unclear, and X’s internal cybersecurity teams are reportedly investigating alongside external partners. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
Cybersecurity analysts say the nature of the outage could indicate a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack or a targeted breach aimed at the platform’s authentication systems.
Ongoing Updates Expected
X has yet to release an official technical update or timeline for a full recovery. Meanwhile, affected users have taken to other platforms to express frustration, with #XDown trending on alternative social media sites.
This incident adds to growing pressure on Musk, whose leadership at X has already drawn criticism over platform stability, moderation policies, and staffing cuts since acquiring the company in 2022.
