Phone scammer nabbed in daring Tunbridge Wells arrest after targeting pensioner
Fake cop caught red-handed in supermarket car park sting
A suspected phone scammer has been arrested in Tunbridge Wells after allegedly tricking a pensioner out of thousands of euros. The fraudster posed as a police officer and fraud investigator to convince a man in his 70s that his bank account was at risk.
On Tuesday, 25 March, the victim received a chilling phone call warning that his bank account was compromised. He was then told to withdraw a large sum of money and meet the “fraud investigator” in a Pembury supermarket car park.
Quick-footed cops spring into action
Kent Police swooped on the tip-off at 12.05pm, spotting the suspect in the Tesco car park. After a short but sharp foot chase, officers caught and detained the man on the spot.
The suspect was identified as 24-year-old Thai-Rye Wright-Lewis from Walton Green, New Addington, Croydon. He was promptly hauled into custody and charged with conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.
Fraud fighter police issue stern warning
Wright-Lewis was remanded to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 27 March.
