Massive Gas Explosion Levels House in Worksop

A huge gas explosion tore through a terraced house in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, on Saturday night, flattening the property and forcing nearby homes to be evacuated. Emergency services rushed to the scene on John Street around 7.30pm after a deafening blast shook the neighbourhood.

Chaos and Evacuations as Neighbours Flee

Police and firefighters arrived to find the house completely collapsed, with rubble scattered across the street and damage to adjacent houses. Fire engines from Worksop, Warsop, Mansfield, and Clowne battled the wreckage as rescue efforts continued into the night.

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed numerous homes were evacuated and several roads closed. A police cordon remains in place while crews assess the damage and safety risks.

“This is a major incident, and emergency services will remain at the scene throughout the night. Multiple properties have been evacuated as we work with our partners to respond to this incident and understand how it happened. We are actively working to account for all local residents,” said Chief Inspector Neil Humphris.

Members of the public are urged to steer clear of the area to let emergency teams work safely and smoothly.

Widespread Damage and No Serious Injuries Yet

Social media images show devastating damage — a collapsed roof, debris littering the street, and harm to neighboring buildings. Drone footage reveals the full scale of the disaster as firefighters damp down hotspots in the rubble.

A Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Firefighters are currently dealing with a gas explosion on John Street, Worksop. We ask the public to avoid the area while crews do their work.”

So far, no serious injuries have been reported. Ambulance crews continue checking on residents and assessing the scene.

Investigation and Community Rally

Officials suspect a gas leak triggered the explosion, but the exact cause remains under investigation. The Health and Safety Executive and utility firms are expected to join the probe.

Local councillors and neighbours are stepping up to help, with some offering shelter to those displaced. The council may open an emergency rest centre if needed.
