Police have uncovered a major haul of cannabis worth up to £1 million hidden inside a truck in Witham.

Officers from Essex Police stopped the lorry on Wednesday (April 23) after responding to reports of a suspicious incident on Perry Road. Upon searching the trailer, they discovered around 300kg of cannabis, believed to have a street value close to £1 million.

A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of a controlled drug. He has since been released on conditional bail while investigations continue.

Inspector Phil Jackson praised the swift actions of officers, saying: “This is a significant seizure of suspected controlled drugs. By removing this quantity from circulation, we are preventing serious organised crime from profiting and protecting our local communities.

He added: “Drug offences are not victimless crimes. They often lead to anti-social behaviour, exploitation, and wider harm for residents and businesses. We remain committed to tackling drug crime across Essex.
