Police have uncovered a major haul of cannabis worth up to £1 million hidden inside a truck in Witham.

Officers from Essex Police stopped the lorry on Wednesday (April 23) after responding to reports of a suspicious incident on Perry Road. Upon searching the trailer, they discovered around 300kg of cannabis, believed to have a street value close to £1 million.

A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of a controlled drug. He has since been released on conditional bail while investigations continue.

Inspector Phil Jackson praised the swift actions of officers, saying: “This is a significant seizure of suspected controlled drugs. By removing this quantity from circulation, we are preventing serious organised crime from profiting and protecting our local communities.

He added: “Drug offences are not victimless crimes. They often lead to anti-social behaviour, exploitation, and wider harm for residents and businesses. We remain committed to tackling drug crime across Essex.

Cannabis remains classified as a Class B controlled drug in the UK, and Essex Police have reaffirmed their ongoing efforts to combat drug possession, supply, and the broader criminal networks that profit from the trade.

Anyone with information about drug-related activity in their area is encouraged to contact Essex Police or report anonymously via Crimestoppers.
