Man Held Without Bail in Chilling Chinatown Murder
Alphonso Joyner, 23, locked up without bail after deadly shooting in Chinatown
Frantic Shootout Ends in Murder
Alphonso Joyner appeared in court on Thursday for a bond hearing but was ordered held without bail. Prosecutors painted a grim picture of Tuesday afternoon’s shooting that left 71-year-old Woom Sing Tse dead. Joyner faces charges including murder, aggravated use of a deadly weapon, and possession of a revoked FOID card.
Cold-Blooded Attack Caught on Camera
Authorities say Tse was walking down West 23rd Street when a vehicle pulled up. The driver — alleged to be Joyner — fired several shots at Tse from inside the car but missed at first. As Tse tried to escape, the gunman fired again, hitting him. He then got out, stood over Tse, and fired once more before speeding off.
Quick Police Work Leads to Arrest
Thanks to detailed vehicle descriptions and license plate info, police spotted the suspect’s car on the Kennedy Expressway moments later. They pulled the vehicle over and arrested Joyner without incident. Officers found the murder weapon — a “ghost gun” — next to him, and he had gunshot residue on his hands.
Motive a Mystery as Chinatown Rallies
“I cannot say why this happened… sometimes people just do evil people things,” said Assistant State’s Attorney James Murphy.
The Chinatown community has been praised for its swift action. Surveillance footage and vital evidence were uncovered thanks to the Chinatown Chamber of Commerce and local groups working together to help the police.
Joyner’s public defender maintains his client’s innocence as the investigation continues.
