Brit Tourist Jailed in Vietnam for Perfume Theft at Tan Son Nhat Airport

A British tourist has been jailed for 14 months in Vietnam after stealing a bottle of perfume from a duty-free shop at Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

Ryan James George was caught on CCTV lifting a 100ml bottle of perfume valued at 5.1 million Vietnamese dong (approximately £145) from a retail shelf in the departures area of the bustling Ho Chi Minh City airport on 17 May 2024.

The 34-year-old tourist reportedly placed the item in his bag without paying and attempted to leave. He was quickly intercepted by airport security personnel and handed over to local authorities.

George appeared before a Vietnamese court and was convicted on 13 May 2025. He was sentenced to 14 months in prison under local theft and criminal conduct statutes.

CCTV footage, which was reviewed in court, played a critical role in securing the conviction. The footage clearly depicted George concealing the item and leaving the store without attempting payment.

A photo released from the courtroom shows George standing before the judge during sentencing. He has not issued a public statement.

Official Comment and Legal Context

Vietnamese legal experts note that theft in public infrastructure locations—particularly international airports—is treated with severe penalties under local criminal law. Foreign nationals are not exempt from these consequences.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has yet to comment on the case, but British citizens abroad are urged to respect local laws, which can differ significantly from those in the UK.

Context and Reactions

The incident has sparked discussion online, with social media users divided. Some called the sentence “harsh for a £145 theft,” while others noted the importance of upholding law and order in international travel zones.

No additional charges are being pursued against George at this time, and there is no indication of an appeal.
