Massive Police Presence Poised for London Gaza Protest
London gears up for a high-profile protest march organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and other groups tomorrow. Thousands are expected to take to the streets, and around 1,500 officers will be deployed to keep the peace.
Route and Restrictions: What to Expect
The march kicks off at 1.30pm on Park Lane, starting south of Marble Arch on the northbound carriageway. Protesters will proceed along Park Lane, Knightsbridge, and Kensington Road, finishing near Kensington Court with speeches set to follow. The event wraps by 5pm, with dispersal by 6pm.
An exclusion zone will keep demonstrators at least 100 metres from the Israeli Embassy for the first time since early October. Police have also imposed restrictions to protect sensitive sites, including local synagogues.
Police Tighten Controls with Tech and Road Closures
Commander Kyle Gordon, who’s leading the policing operation, stressed the police will be firm but fair. “We respect the right to peaceful protest,” he said, “but expect everyone to follow the law and respect public safety.”
Police will employ facial recognition tech and CCTV to spot troublemakers. Road closures along the route aim to ensure participant and public safety. Officers will watch for offensive placards to prevent disorder.
Tensions High, Police Ready to Act
This protest is the latest in a string of large demonstrations following the October 7 terror attacks in Israel and ongoing conflict in Gaza. Police from across the UK have been brought into London to bolster numbers.
Commander Gordon warned: “While we aim to facilitate peaceful protests, we are prepared to respond robustly to any unlawful behaviour.”
London’s police force is pulling out all the stops to ensure Saturday’s demonstration stays lawful and disruption is kept to a minimum.
