Massive Warehouse Fire Sparks Major Incident in Rushden

A towering blaze has ripped through a recycling warehouse on the Sanders Lodge industrial estate in Rushden, Northamptonshire. Thick black smoke is billowing across the sky, visible for miles, as emergency services battle the inferno.

Early Morning Chaos on Industrial Estate

Firefighters were called just before 6.30am on Friday, May 23, after a large quantity of plastic caught fire inside the warehouse. The intense flames and thick smoke prompted authorities to declare a Major Incident.

Residents as far as 20 miles away—including in Towcester—reported seeing enormous smoke plumes clouding the horizon. Officials have urged locals to keep all windows and doors shut and stay well clear of the area.

Massive Firefighting Effort Underway

  • 12 fire engines deployed
  • 3 turntable ladders in action
  • 2 water bowsers and a high-volume pump supporting efforts
  • Cross-border support from Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue

The gas supply to the estate has been cut, affecting up to 500 properties nearby. Businesses in the industrial park remain impacted as fire crews work hard to contain the blaze.

Fire Service Sounds Warning

Area Manager Mick Berry of Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue said:

“This is a large fire that is having a significant impact on the Sanders Lodge industrial estate. A multi-agency decision has been taken to declare a Major Incident, but fire crews are working extremely hard to prevent the fire from spreading and reduce the smoke plume. We anticipate that we will be on scene over the rest of the weekend.”

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, with the building evacuated before firefighters arrived.
