An inquest has been opened into the death of 23-year-old Curtis Moran, whose body was discovered earlier this month at the Cranbrook Hotel on Coventry Road in Ilford.

Discovery and Initial Police Response

Mr Moran, originally from Oval Grange, Hartlepool, was found deceased on June 12 after concerns were raised about his welfare. Officers from the Metropolitan Police were called to the hotel and entered his room, locating Mr Moran in the bathroom.

Senior coroner Graeme Irvine told East London Coroner’s Court:

“The Metropolitan Police Service referred the death to me as it appeared to them that Mr Moran’s death was unnatural.”

Post-Mortem and Background

A post-mortem examination confirmed a cause of death typically associated with suicide. While no note of intent was found, the court heard that Mr Moran had previously attempted to take his own life on two occasions.

In line with national media guidelines, details of the cause and method will not be reported in this article to prevent imitative behavior, following advice from the Samaritans and other public health bodies.

Inquest Proceedings

Coroner Irvine confirmed that the criteria for an inquest had been met and that the matter will now proceed to a public hearing.

“This will need to be explored in a public hearing,” he said.

The court also heard that inquiries will be made into Mr Moran’s past medical care, including whether he was known to mental health services in County Durham or East London.

The coroner has requested:

A final inquest hearing has been provisionally scheduled for October 2025.
