Inquest Launched After Tragic Death of 23-Year-Old Curtis Moran at Ilford Hotel

Body Found at Cranbrook Hotel

Police have opened an inquest into the death of 23-year-old Curtis Moran. The young man’s body was discovered on June 12 at the Cranbrook Hotel on Coventry Road, Ilford. Officers from the Metropolitan Police were called to check on Curtis after welfare concerns were raised. They found him in the bathroom of his hotel room.

Coroner Flags Unnatural Death

Senior Coroner Graeme Irvine told East 1 Coroner’s Court the Metropolitan Police referred the death as it appeared “unnatural.” A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death was consistent with suicide. No note was found. However, the court heard Curtis had previously tried to take his own life twice.

Following national media guidelines and advice from the Samaritans, specific details about the cause will not be published to prevent copycat acts.

Inquest to Probe Mental Health History

The coroner confirmed the case meets criteria for a full inquest, set for a public hearing. “This will need to be explored in a public hearing,” he stated.

Investigations will review Curtis’s medical care and whether he was known to mental health services in County 1 or East London. The coroner has requested:

  • A statement from Curtis’s family describing who he was and any worries they had.
  • Access to his GP records.
  • A review of contacts with local mental health providers.

The final inquest hearing is provisionally scheduled for October 2025.
