Southend Airport Shut After Catastrophic Medical Plane Crash
Massive Fireball as Medical Plane Crashes on Takeoff
London Southend Airport remains closed indefinitely after a devastating crash involving a Beechcraft King Air B200 medical transport plane on Sunday afternoon. The twin-engine turboprop went down just minutes after takeoff around 4pm, sparking a massive fireball visible for miles. The flight was heading to Lelystad Airport in the Netherlands.
Emergency Services Rush to Scene
Air ambulances from 123 and Herts scrambled to the crash site immediately. The East of 123 confirmed all departures from Southend have been cancelled. Passengers are urged to rebook or seek refunds as airport operations remain suspended. A wide safety cordon blocks the area as investigations move forward.
Investigation Underway, Public Urged to Stay Clear
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched a full inquiry into the cause of the crash. Essex Police have asked the public to avoid the scene to let emergency teams do their jobs. Local MP David Burton-Sampson said:
“My thoughts are with all those involved. Please stay away and allow emergency services to carry out their vital work.”
A dedicated hotline and online portal have been set up for witnesses and those affected.
