Bomb scare in Newhaven as man held and grenades found at property
A major emergency was sparked in Newhaven after police found two decommissioned grenades at a local home. A 54-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary, leading to a tense day for nearby residents.
Grenades spark evacuation
On the evening of Wednesday, July 23, Sussex Police arrested the local man and searched a property on Newfield Road linked to him. Officers initially discovered what appeared to be live unexploded munitions.
As a precaution, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called in to assess the danger. Police swiftly established a cordon, evacuated surrounding homes, and Lewes District Council provided emergency shelter for affected residents.
Bomb squad confirms grenades are safe
After careful examination, bomb disposal experts confirmed the grenades were decommissioned and posed no threat. The safety cordon was lifted, and evacuated residents have now returned home.
Ongoing police searches and investigation
Despite the all-clear, searches at the property continue as police hunt for evidence linked to the burglary or any other suspicious items.
Inspector Sarah Taylor said: “We thank the community for their patience during this disruption. Thanks also to Lewes District Council for providing rest facilities for those displaced. Officers will remain in the area to support the investigation and conduct further searches.”
The suspect is on conditional bail pending further enquiries. Police have increased patrols in the area and appeal to anyone with information to come forward.
