Man Busted Over Suspicious Fire at London Asylum Seeker Hotel
A 64-year-old man has been arrested after a suspicious blaze broke out at the Thistle Barbican Hotel in Islington, London. The hotel is home to asylum seekers. Police suspect arson with intent to endanger life and possession of a bladed weapon.
Fire Quickly Snuffed Out, No Injuries
The fire erupted just before 11pm on Wednesday, 24 September, in the hotel grounds on Dingley Road. Quick-thinking staff doused the flames before police arrived. Thankfully, nobody was injured in the scare.
Hate Crime Probe Launched
Commander Hayley Sewart praised officers for their swift arrest and confirmed the investigation is ongoing. “We understand the concern in the local community and are investigating this as a hate crime,” she said.
Local Leaders Condemn the Attack
Islington Council leader Una O’Halloran and MP Dame Emily Thornberry slammed the fire as a “despicable and cowardly attack.”
“Islington is a proud beacon of tolerance and diversity that welcomes people from all over the world. Anyone who seeks to incite hatred or violence has no place in Islington,” they said.
Police continue to hunt for any more suspects and urge residents to stay vigilant. The Met Police have stressed the investigation remains a top priority.
