BBC Sting Reveals Officers’ Appalling Behaviour
Sir Mark Rowley, head of the Metropolitan Police, lashed out last night after explosive undercover footage exposed officers at London’s Charing Cross police station making racist, sexist, and far-right slurs. The officers were caught bragging about using excessive force on prisoners.
The undercover BBC reporter spent months inside the UK’s busiest custody suite, secretly recording between August 2024 and January 2025. The damning Panorama footage reveals Islamophobic and misogynistic comments made by officers during off-duty socialising. One even voiced support for far-right activist Tommy Robinson, while others boasted about abusing detainees.
Top Cop Calls Conduct “Reprehensible”
“The behaviour depicted in this programme is reprehensible and completely unacceptable,” said Sir Mark Rowley. “Officers behaving in such appalling, criminal ways let down our communities.”
He issued a public apology for the Met, admitting that the shocking conduct will severely damage public trust. “For that, I am truly sorry,” he said.
Scandal Unfolds: Suspensions and Investigations
- Nine officers have been suspended following the revelations.
- The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating 11 individuals for gross misconduct.
- One officer faces a criminal probe over alleged attempts to pervert the course of justice.
Sir Mark vowed disciplinary hearings within weeks for those found guilty of racism, misogyny, or abuse of power.
Charing Cross Scandal Not the First
This latest fiasco adds to Charing Cross’s troubled history. The 2022 scandal that brought down ex-Met Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick stemmed from similar issues. London Mayor Sadiq Khan had promised a cultural overhaul – but the latest footage shows deep-rooted problems persist.
The Met now faces tough questions on trust, accountability, and whether the public can rely on the police to keep detainees safe and treated fairly in custody.
