Yarmouth Lifeboat Rescues Yacht Trapped by Fishing Net
Stranded Sailing Yacht Stalls Near Bouldnor Bay
On Monday 24 May 2021, Yarmouth’s Severn class all-weather lifeboat, Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer), was scrambled by HM Coastguard at 2.13pm to aid a 45-foot yacht. The vessel was stuck northeast of Yarmouth close to Bouldnor Bay with a fouled propeller.
Fishing Net Snags Rudder and Propeller
The Yarmouth RNLI volunteer crew quickly assessed the scene. The yacht’s crew had barely any control as a discarded fishing net wrapped tightly around both its rudder and propeller.
With the boat unable to move under engine power or sail, the lifeboat crew secured an alongside tow for a swift trip back to Yarmouth Harbour.
Coxswain Praises Quick Thinking and Training
“Knowing how to call for help when needed meant the yacht and crew were rescued quickly and safely,” said Coxswain Howard Lester.
The lifeboat returned to base and was ready for action again by 5.08pm.
