Teenagers across the UK have just got their GCSE and Scottish National Certificate results. With futures on the line, many families are now sorting what’s next. If your child’s staying on in full-time education or training, you could keep getting Child Benefit payments – but you need to act fast.
HMRC Urges Parents to Update Child Benefit Details
HMRC has sent reminder letters to parents and carers with children in their last year of school or home study. If your child is staying in education past 16, you must notify HMRC by the end of August — or risk losing your Child Benefit payments.
It’s a quick and easy process. You can update your info online at GOV.UK or simply send back the 297b form HMRC sent you.
Child Benefit Rules: Who’s Eligible?
- Paid to parents or carers responsible for a child under 16
- Or under 20 if they’re in full-time, non-advanced education or approved training
- If you or your partner earn over £50,000, be aware of the High Income Child Benefit Charge — you may need to pay tax via Self Assessment
Post Office Card Accounts Closing – Switch Now!
Big heads up! HMRC will stop paying Child Benefit, Guardians Allowance, and tax credits into Post Office card accounts after 30 November 2021.
If you use one, you MUST update HMRC with your new bank, building society, or credit union details ASAP to avoid missing payments.
