Operation Brock Barriers Set to Clash on M20 Tonight Amid Dover Ferry Chaos

Kent’s notorious Operation Brock moveable barrier system is rolling out tonight (Monday 21 March) as ferry capacity at the Port of Dover shrinks again.

Precautionary Move to Keep Traffic Moving

The Kent Resilience Forum confirmed the M20 will close between junctions 8 and 9 from 8pm tonight for barrier deployment. Both carriageways will reopen by 6am Tuesday, with the contraflow active to keep traffic flowing.

Reduced ferry capacity has triggered the move. While there’s room for displaced P&O freight, officials want to dodge gridlock ahead of any chaos.

How Operation Brock Works

  • The system uses two specialist machines to move over 14,000 tonnes of concrete barriers and 8,000 cones into position within hours.
  • A contraflow contraption channels lorries bound for mainland Europe onto the coastbound M20 carriageway from junction 8 to 9 (maidstone/" title="Maidstone" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Maidstone to Ashford) for queuing if needed.
  • Other traffic, including cars, local freight, and motorbikes, shifts onto the London-bound carriageway contraflow.
  • Clear signage will guide drivers on which side to stay on depending on destination.

During deployment, a fully signed diversion will operate overnight to minimise disruption.

Strict Legal Rules for HGVs

“When Operation Brock is in force, it is a legal requirement for HGVs to follow the signed routes only for journeys to Port of Dover and Eurotunnel,” said Kent officials.

Operation Brock is one of several measures designed to keep Kent traffic moving smoothly when English Channel services hit snags.
