Fake Buyer Swipes iPhone and More in Bournemouth Scam
Just before 4pm on Saturday 5 November 2022, a man showed up at a Bournemouth address to buy an Apple iPhone 13 Pro advertised on Facebook. He seemed genuine, appearing to transfer the cash and even showed proof on his phone. But the money never hit the seller’s account.
The victim didn’t back down. They snapped a picture of the man’s blue BMW, took down the car registration and even noted his driving licence before handing over the phone. The fraudster drove off – leaving no cash behind.
String of Scams Hits Dorset and Weymouth
This wasn’t a one-off. Between 4 and 5 November, six similar scams hit Bournemouth, East Dorset, and Weymouth. The thief made off with phones, a watch, a camera, and an iPad – all sold via dodgy Facebook deals.
Dorset Police Hunt ‘Convincing’ Scammer
“An investigation is underway into this series of incidents and we are carrying out enquiries to identify the person responsible,” said Police Sergeant Hayley Lyne of Dorset Police.
“The offender went to great lengths to appear credible. Sadly, the car and licence details turned out to be fake.
“We now have an image of the man and urge anyone who recognises him to come forward.”
