M25 Gantry Chaos: Two Arrested After High-Profile Protests
Kent Police swooped after protesters caused disruption on motorway gantries over the M25. A man and a woman were hauled into custody following dramatic stand-offs at busy junctions.
Early Morning Arrests at Junctions 4 and 1A
Officers were called to junction 4 at around 7am on Wednesday 9 November 2022. The motorway was briefly closed to remove and arrest a 71-year-old man from Cornwall. Half an hour later, at junction 1A, police arrested a 75-year-old woman from Somerset following a similar incident.
Both remain in police custody as investigations continue.
Earlier Protests Spark Multiple Charges
The week saw several protests on the M25 gantries. On Monday 7 November at 8am, officers removed and arrested a woman from a gantry near the Dartford Crossing at junction 1A. The motorway stayed open to limit disruption.
On Tuesday 8 November, police acted on intelligence of planned protests at junction 1B, arresting two women nearby.
Three Women Charged With Public Nuisance
- Theresa Norton, 54, from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, charged over the Monday 7 November incident at junction 1A. She appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court the same day.
- Lucia Whittaker-de-Abreu, 33, of Derby, charged after Tuesday’s arrests.
- Molly Berry, 70, of Buckinghamshire, also charged and due to face court alongside Whittaker-de-Abreu.
All face charges of intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance.
