Teen Stabbed to Death in Brutal Southwark Chase
A savage chase through the streets of Southwark ended in tragedy last year when 17-year-old Rashai Annang fatally stabbed McCaulay Junior Urugbezi-Edwards, 18. The pair met by chance near Elephant and Castle Station before the deadly attack unfolded.
Chased on a Bike, Then Stabbed
- Annang, now 18 and from Lewisham, pursued McCaulay on a pedal bike after a brief encounter.
- CCTV caught the harrowing moment as McCaulay ran for his life through Newington Gardens and Tiverton Street, only to be tackled and stabbed multiple times.
- The court described the attack as “deliberate and merciless” with McCaulay left utterly defenseless and kicked while on the ground.
No Remorse From Attacker
Detective Sergeant Sarah Fisher slammed the unprovoked assault: “This was a vicious unprovoked attack by Rashai Annang on McCaulay. He has shown no remorse for his actions.” Despite desperate attempts by London’s Air Ambulance and paramedics, McCaulay died at 10.51pm on 5 May 2019.
Justice Served, Sentence Pending
Annang was found guilty of murder at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday, 14 September. He will be sentenced on 26 October. Police tracked him down in a Norwich hotel days after the attack, where he was hiding to avoid arrest.
“It has been a traumatic time for the family who have lost a much loved son. The right verdict has been reached today, justice has been done for McCaulay,” said Detective Fisher.
Authorities urged the community to support efforts to prevent more lives being lost to street violence. The fatal stabbing is another grim reminder of the dangers facing London’s youth.
