MV Pentalina Runs Aground at St Margaret's Hope – All 60 Onboard Safe
Smoke Detected Before Emergency Landing
The MV Pentalina has come to a halt at St Margaret’s Hope after smoke was spotted in the engine room. Onboard were 56 adults, three children, and a baby – all accounted for and safe. The vessel was grounded as a precaution, with emergency services arriving promptly.
Coastguard Takes Command as Rescue Efforts Underway
An Orkney Islands Council spokeswoman confirmed: “Our Marine Services and Emergency Planning teams are aware of the incident involving the Pentalina. Emergency services are on scene, with the Coastguard in command.” She added: “We will provide additional updates and assistance as needed.”
RNLI Lifeboats Dispatched Amid Safety Fears
Several RNLI lifeboats rushed to the scene to assist. An RMT spokesperson revealed the seriousness of the situation: “We are aware of a major incident onboard the MV Pentalina which has run aground, taking on water with a fire in the engine room.”
Recent Return to Service Adds Context
The MV Pentalina had only just returned to service, freeing up the MV Alfred to be leased to CalMac from the Pentland Firth, making this an especially unwelcome disruption to ferry services in the area.
