Shock Resignation: Canterbury MP Dumps Labour Over Starmer Sleaze Scandal
Canterbury’s own MP Rosie Duffield has quit the Labour Party, blasting Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership as “sleaze, nepotism, and avarice.” The 53-year-old is the first to jump ship since the last general election, slamming the PM for accepting extravagant gifts while clinging to harsh Tory policies.
Duffield Slams Starmer’s “Off the Scale” Conduct
In a fiery resignation letter, Duffield didn’t hold back. She accused Starmer and his inner circle of “tarnishing and humiliating” Labour’s proud history. “I’m so ashamed of what you and your inner circle have done,” she said, condemning the “luxury gifts” scandal unveiled by a recent Sky News investigation that showed Starmer received over £107,000 worth of gifts and hospitality since 2019.
Crushing Tory-Copy Policies Anger MP
Duffield also slammed Labour’s continued support for the Tory two-child benefit cap and the means-testing of winter fuel payments. She called these moves “cruel and unnecessary,” accusing Starmer of hypocrisy for accepting expensive designer gifts while keeping policies that “entrench poverty” among children.
Staying True to Canterbury — But Going Independent
Despite walking away from Labour, Duffield vows to keep fighting for her Canterbury constituents—as an independent. She promises to be “guided by my core Labour values,” refusing to let party politics get in the way of local interests.
“Someone with far-above-average wealth choosing to keep the Conservatives’ two-child limit to benefits while accepting costly personal gifts — this is undeserving of the Labour prime minister title,” Duffield wrote.
