Girls from Newsome Academy Brighten Up Holmfirth Police Station

The Kirklees Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) has praised a group of creative girls from Newsome Academy for their uplifting “positive pebbles” project. These hand-painted stones now inspire female staff at Holmfirth Police Station.

Holiday Club Sparks Creativity

The girls took part in a free Holiday Club during the Spring Bank Half Term, funded by the Mayor of West Yorkshire’s Safer Communities Fund. The event was organised by PC Sally Baines, Newsome Academy’s Safer Schools Police Officer.

Inspired by loose pebbles from recent building work at the station, PC Baines collected a bagful – with permission from Inspector Vanessa Briggs – for the girls to decorate. They painted powerful slogans like “Girl Power,” “Be a voice not an echo,” and “Girls can do anything.”

From Pebbles to Proud Display

Once varnished, the finished pebbles were returned to the station by students Miracle Williams and Emmanuella Ademunmi. Together with Inspector Briggs, they arranged the colourful stones in a display for staff and visitors to enjoy.

“Thank you so much to Miracle and Emmanuella for meeting with me at Holmfirth Police Station. It was lovely to chat with two confident and assured young ladies who enjoyed sharing their positive outlook.” – Inspector Vanessa Briggs

“I’m really impressed with the beautifully decorated pebbles, which showcase messages I champion myself. They’ve created a vibrant, thought-provoking display outside our station.”

More Fun and Inspiration to Come

PC Sally Baines said: “The ‘Be You’ Girls Holiday Club was all about fun, creativity, building self-confidence, and staying safe. The girls loved decorating the pebbles to inspire our staff here at Holmfirth Station.”

“Thanks to the Mayor’s Safer Communities Fund, the club was free and packed with varied activities. We have three more clubs lined up this summer across Kirklees – so watch this space for more inspiring pebbles!”
