Police have called off a bomb scare on Sheerness beach after a suspected wartime device turned out to be a dud.
Bomb Squad and Coastguard Rush to Beach
The drama unfolded yesterday morning (October 10) near the swimming pool steps on Sheerness beach, Sheppey. Officers were scrambled after reports of a suspicious item that looked like a wartime bomb.
A Ministry of Defence bomb disposal team and coastguards quickly joined the hunt. The beach was sealed off just before 10.50am as experts tried to identify the suspicious object.
Rising Tide Swallows Suspected Bomb
But the incoming tide had other plans. The uncooperative sea swallowed the object before it could be safely inspected or neutralised.
Emergency crews returned after dark, scanning the shoreline with flashlights, but found no trace of any danger.
False Alarm – No Threat Posed
Today (October 11), police confirmed the ‘bomb’ was a false alarm with zero risk to the public.
“I had seen them earlier during the daytime while I was fishing with my friends at Neptune Jetty,” said Bunny, a local fisherman.
“They were searching for something, however, the tide came in over the object. So they opened the cordon and left.”
“We go metal detecting down there and find disposed laughing gas bottles all the time that look like mortars.”
The Ministry of Defence has been approached for comment.
