Nigel Farage Cleared of Election Spending Fraud
Nigel Farage dodges an Electoral Commission probe over his Clacton election spending. The watchdog found zero evidence that Farage or Reform UK broke any spending laws. The case is officially shut.
Claims of Overspending Blow Up in Former Councillor’s Face
Ex-Reform UK councillor Richard Everett accused Farage of cooking the books, claiming the £20,660 spending limit was busted by nearly £9,000. But official records show Reform UK spent £20,299.80, just under the legal limit.
“We did not identify any expenditure relating to Mr Farage’s election campaign in Clacton that should have been declared in Reform UK’s national expenditure,” said the Electoral Commission.
Disgraced Ex-Councillor’s Allegations Slammed as False
Everett, who was kicked out of Reform UK, took his complaints to the Met Police, insisting Farage’s campaign underreported costs including leaflets, banners, and office refurbishments.
“I do not think that that is an accurate figure. In fact, I think the £20,660 was exceeded,” Everett claimed.
But Farage’s camp dismissed him as a sore loser. Peter Harris, Farage’s election agent, fired back:
“This was a politically motivated complaint that has been thoroughly examined and decisively dismissed. The facts are clear, the process has been properly followed, and there is no basis for any further allegation.”
Farage Scores Major Win Over Spending Scandal
The Electoral Commission’s final word ruled out any wrong-doing:
“We did not identify credible evidence of potential offences of electoral law. Therefore, our decision is to close our consideration of the matter following initial enquiries and take no further action.”
This clears Farage’s name and backs Reform UK’s claim that their campaign was clean. It’s a huge boost for Farage, who finally clinched his first Parliamentary seat in Clacton after multiple failures.
