Tragic New Year’s Eve: Boy and Dog Vanish, Heartbreaking Discovery Follows

Four-year-old Johnathan Everett “John John” Boley vanished while playing outside his dad’s home in Jasper, Alabama, on New Year’s Eve. Last seen at 11:30am with his six-year-old brother and their black Lab, Buck, the community braced for the worst.

Heartbreaking Find After Desperate Search

After a frantic two-day hunt, Johnathan’s body was found just two miles from home in rural Walker County, outside Birmingham. Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith confirmed the grim discovery at a press conference on Friday. In a bittersweet twist, the family’s loyal dog Buck was found alive nearby.

Father Arrested Over Alarming Charges

Johnathan’s father, Jameson Kyle Boley, was arrested during the probe after police uncovered suspicious devices on his property—initially thought to be explosives. Though later ruled harmless, Jameson now faces two counts of chemical endangerment of a child and one count of illegal manufacture of destructive devices or bacteriological weapons.

“The father’s charges have nothing to do with the missing child case, it’s something totally separate,” Sheriff Smith emphasised.

Huge Search Effort Mobilises Community and Authorities

The major search operation involved over 160 volunteers, 126 first responders, the FBI, drones, helicopters, tracking dogs, and divers scouring 500 acres. Johnathan’s father reported him missing at around 12:30pm on New Year’s Eve, triggering the all-out manhunt.

Johnathan’s mother had relocated to Florida last year, with the boy under a limited custody arrangement. He was visiting his father for the holidays and was due back with his mum on Thursday.

Community Left Shattered, Vigil Planned

Johnathan’s aunt fondly remembered him as a “country boy who loves nature, Paw Patrol, and running.” Sheriff Smith said the whole community is “devastated” by the tragic loss.

The cause of death remains unconfirmed. A vigil will be held Friday at 7pm CT at Cornerstone Church in Jasper as the town mourns.
