Two Men Nearly Drowned in Thames Estuary Tidal Trap

A disaster was just minutes away when two men got trapped by fast-rising tides on Southend’s sandbanks in the Thames Estuary. Thanks to lightning-fast actions from Kent Police’s specialist marine officers, tragedy was narrowly avoided.

Distress Call Sparks Urgent Rescue Mission

At around 10:45am on Wednesday, 21 January 2025, the Kent Police Search and Marine Unit was patrolling on the vessel Invicta when they received a distress call. Two men — one in his 20s and the other in his 30s — had wandered onto the Essex sandbanks but were stranded as the tide surged in.

Being closest to the location, the Invicta raced to the scene with precise navigation help from the coastguard.

Tense Rescue as Water Rises to Neck Level

Officers found the men waist-deep in water, with the tide already reaching their necks. Experts believe they had less than 10 minutes before being fully submerged. Without hesitation, the marine team hauled them to safety.

Quick Medical Aid and Praise for Life-Saving Crew

The rescued men were rushed to Southend Pier, where coastguard paramedics and an ambulance were waiting. Chief Inspector Alan Rogers of Kent Police’s Tactical Operations was on scene and praised the team’s professionalism.

“Kent’s unique coastal and river geography makes our Search and Marine Unit absolutely vital,” said Rogers. “These officers are highly trained professionals who protect the public and save lives every day. Seeing the team in action was a privilege. I’m delighted they could help these men when it really mattered.”

Without Kent’s marine officers’ swift response, the outcome could have been catastrophic.
