A new high-tech interview suite at Newark Police is transforming support for sexual assault survivors and other crime victims. The Digitally Recorded Interview (DRI) suite, named in honour of fallen PC Christopher McDonald, offers a safe, discreet space for victims to give evidence, helping crack tough cases.
State-of-the-Art DRI Suite Opens in Newark
The fully refurbished DRI suite at Newark Police Station features unobtrusive video cameras to record sensitive interviews with detectives. It’s part of Nottinghamshire Police’s network of seven DRI facilities across the county – all exceeding national standards.
Honouring Fallen Hero PC Christopher McDonald
PC McDonald was just 19 when he died in May 1978 after bravely tackling multiple burglars in Worksop. The original Newark DRI suite opened in 2007 and was named in his memory. His family recently visited the new facility to see the upgrades firsthand.
Crucial Tool for Justice
Detective Inspector Gail Routledge said: “DRI suites are vital in bringing serious offenders to justice. Victims and witnesses often arrive traumatised, so recording their evidence quickly and sensitively is essential. These recordings can be the only chance they have to tell their story.”
“Maintaining this link to PC McDonald is important. We hope officers using the suite reflect on his sacrifice and their role in the wider policing family.”
Legacy of Bravery
Following his death, PC McDonald received the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery in 1980. Albert Loveday, who murdered PC McDonald, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. The new DRI suite stands as a lasting tribute to the fallen officer’s courage, helping victims find their voice and justice be served.
