Chaos on the A1 as Audi Drives Wrong Way
Disaster struck on the A1 in Northumberland on Saturday evening when a blue Audi Q3 suddenly swerved onto the wrong side of the carriageway for reasons unknown. The rogue manoeuvre led to a terrifying head-on smash with a silver Mitsubishi Mirage carrying three passengers at around 7.30pm.
Emergency Services Race to Scene
Eight people were injured in the crash, including five in the Audi and three in the Mitsubishi. Paramedics rushed all victims to the hospital. One man in his 40s sustained serious injuries but was reported to be in stable condition. Both cars were left badly damaged.
Driver Arrested Following Incident
The 37-year-old man behind the wheel of the Audi has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has since been released on bail as police continue their investigation.
Road Reopened After Hours of Disruption
The A1 was closed for several hours between Alnwick and Belford while emergency crews worked the scene. The North East Ambulance Service deployed multiple crews, including specialist paramedics and the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART).
“We treated eight patients in total; two with serious head and leg injuries and six with minor injuries,” said the ambulance service. “Seven were taken to Northumbria Hospital, one to RVI Newcastle.”
Northumbria Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage to assist their ongoing inquiry into this shocking wrong-way crash.
