A shocking crash on the A1 left eight people injured after a car drove the wrong way and slammed head-on into another vehicle. Police have arrested a 37-year-old man and launched a serious investigation.
Wrong-Way Audi Causes Devastating Head-On Smash
The nightmare unfolded around 7.30pm last Saturday in Northumberland. A blue Audi Q3 suddenly veered onto the wrong side of the busy A1 motorway. For reasons still unclear, it collided head-first with a silver Mitsubishi Mirage carrying three passengers.
Eight Hurt as Emergency Crews Race to Scene
- Five people were inside the Audi; three were in the Mitsubishi.
- All eight victims received urgent medical care at the crash site.
- One man in his 40s sustained serious injuries but is now stable.
- Everyone was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Driver Arrested, Road Reopens After Long Closure
The 37-year-old driver of the Audi was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has since been released on bail while police investigations continue.
Authorities closed the A1 for several hours but have now reopened the road.
Police Appeal for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage
“We treated eight patients in total; two with serious injuries to head and leg and a further six with minor injuries,” said the North East Ambulance Service. “Seven patients were taken to Northumbria Hospital in Cramlington and one to RVI in Newcastle.”
Northumbria Police are urging anyone with dashcam footage or any information about the crash to step forward and help with their inquiry.
