A Brighton man has been found guilty of raping a woman at knifepoint in a shocking attack in the city centre.

Philip Smith Caught After Knife Rape Horror

Philip Smith, 28, with no fixed address, was convicted at Lewes Crown Court on Thursday, 26 February, of two counts of rape. The terrifying assault took place in Bartholomew Square in the early hours of Saturday, 9 August 2025.

Around 3.30am, police were called after a woman, 31, was threatened with a knife and attacked while sitting on a public bench. The victim bravely alerted a nearby friend who interrupted the assault.

Swift Police Action Puts Smith Behind Bars

  • Smith was arrested less than an hour later near Quadrophenia Alley on Little East Street.
  • He matched the victim’s description and was caught with multiple knives, including one matching the weapon described.
  • Officers also found Class A drugs in his possession.

While held at Brighton Custody Centre, Smith exposed himself to two women, adding indecent exposure charges to his case.

Serious Charges and Guilty Pleas

Smith faced multiple charges: two counts of rape, two counts of indecent exposure, possession of a Class A drug, and carrying a bladed article in public. He pleaded guilty to all but the rape offences.
