A prisoner serving a life sentence at HMP Isle of Wight landed a jail officer with a punch in a desperate bid to flee a drug-infested wing, a court heard.
Jail Drama at Parkhurst
Daniel Plain appeared via video link at the Isle of Wight court on March 10, admitting to assaulting an emergency worker on January 6, 2026, at the Parkhurst prison site.
Prosecutor Giles Fletcher revealed officers had noted Plain was acting oddly all day, appearing distracted and “not behaving normally.” By late afternoon, he looked “under the influence” and was unsteady on his feet before suddenly clocking an officer with a jab to the jaw.
A struggle broke out involving two officers before staff responded to emergency alarms.
Prisoner’s Calculated Move
Plain later apologised for the attack, which left the officer with a sore jaw. Defending lawyer Hannah Bray said the punch was a “calculated move” to escape the wing where rampant drug use was wreaking havoc on Plain’s mental health.
He was swiftly moved to segregation following the incident.
Hard-Hitting Past
- Plain is serving a life sentence with a minimum 10-year term.
- He’s eligible for parole in 2029.
- The convict carries 37 previous convictions covering 57 offences.
- Among them is a past wounding conviction at HMP Maidstone.
The court sentenced him to an additional four weeks in custody, concurrent with his life term, and slapped on a £154 surcharge.
Drug Plague Hits Prison Wings
This latest incident shines a spotlight on the ongoing battle with drugs inside UK prisons, with inmates often resorting to violence to escape dangerous environments.
