The father of the man who shot dead his wife and two children before turning the gun on himself has pleaded guilty to breaching firearms rules. Ernest Rutledge, 77, from Brookeborough, entered the plea through a barrister at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday.
Horrific Shooting Shakes Maguiresbridge
On July 23 last year, emergency crews found Vanessa Whyte, 45, and her daughter Sara Rutledge dead at their home on Crummeer Road, Maguiresbridge. Their son James Rutledge, 13, was rushed to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital but died days later. Police later revealed the 999 call was made from Sara’s phone, but no one spoke during the call.
Abuse Allegations Emerge
Prior to the shooting, Vanessa had disclosed domestic abuse by Rutledge, including an attempted strangulation. Both children, who attended Enniskillen Royal Grammar School, had reportedly confided in friends about their father’s behaviour.
Firearm Security Under Scrutiny
Last month, Ernest Rutledge was charged with failing to securely store a firearm and ammunition on July 22, the day before the tragedy. The weapon is believed to be the one used in the shooting. The court heard victim impact statements are still pending in “a complicated and sensitive” case. District Judge Alana McSorley ordered pre-sentence reports and adjourned the case until May 13.
