A criminal gang behind a spike in throwing drugs, mobile phones, and banned items into HMP Lewes has been nailed in a big police crackdown. Operation Culprit, launched in 2023, targeted the rising number of parcels hurled over prison walls – including one packed with 19 mobile phones, USB leads, and earphones.
Key Players Locked Up or Facing Trial
- Jay Lindo, 31, was found guilty on all counts at Hove Crown Court.
- Chukwuemeka Anumnne, 30, is possibly facing a retrial on conspiracy charges.
- Jahmal Swaby, 27, admitted to chucking packages over the prison wall; awaiting sentencing.
- Fatimaalzhra Yousif, 23, and inmate Yaanan Reid, 27, both tied to the smuggling ring, pleaded guilty or were convicted.
Operation Culprit: 15 Arrested, Prison Throwovers Plummet
Police revealed Operation Culprit led to 15 arrests and a sharp drop in contraband throwovers at HMP Lewes. Officers warned:
“Offenders will be identified, arrested, and face prison.”
All convicted gang members are set for sentencing on 20 August 2026.
