A migrant has made headlines as the first person convicted of endangering others during a sea crossing to the UK. Tajik man Mohammad, 32, abandoned the overcrowded dinghy he was piloting across the English Channel, leaving passengers at risk when a rescue ship arrived, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) revealed.

Dangerous Crossing in Rough Weather

The attempted crossing took place on January 17 amid poor weather conditions. The vessel was overcrowded, and some passengers lacked life jackets, heightening the danger. Mohammad reached the UK later that day, where he was promptly arrested.

Guilty Plea and Upcoming Sentencing

Mohammad pleaded guilty at Canterbury Crown Court on Tuesday. His sentencing is scheduled for June 10. This conviction arises under new laws introduced by the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act, which came into force just weeks before the incident to crack down on illegal Channel crossings.

Other Cases Under Investigation

  • A 16-year-old Afghan boy was the first charged under this offence but denies endangering 46 people during a January 5 crossing, claiming he was “forced to do so.”
  • Another dinghy pilot, Sudanese national Alnour Mohamed Ali, 27, appeared in court over the deaths of four migrants who died attempting to board a boat on April 9. He faces charges of endangering life.

James Fisher, senior CPS prosecutor, said: “I’m pleased the CPS has secured the first conviction for endangering the lives of others during a Channel crossing since it became an offence in January. We will carry on using new laws to prosecute individuals and gangs who undermine UK border security.”
