Union Flags and King’s Portraits to Become School Staples

Big news for the flag-waving brigade! Reform UK has vowed to have schools display portraits of King Charles and fly the Union Flag if it wins power. But that’s not all – alongside the Union Jack, schools would also be required to fly England’s Cross of St George, Scotland’s Saltire, and Wales’ Red Dragon.

‘Patriotic’ History Lessons on the Way

The party plans to introduce “patriotic” history lessons to boost British pride. This dramatic shake-up, promised within 100 days of Reform taking charge, aims to reverse what they call decades of “substandard” teaching.

“Tory and Labour governments have failed a generation of young people with a substandard curriculum that undermines academic rigour and national identity in favour of promoting their mass migration agenda,” said Reform’s would-be Education Secretary, Suella Braverman. “Reform will end this. As Education Secretary I will introduce a new curriculum that will rekindle national pride and ensure every child leaves school understanding what a privilege it is to be British.”

Will Flags and History Lessons Really Inspire Pride?

Sounds bold, but does staring at flags and the King’s portrait actually make people proud? Some think Reform’s plan appeals mostly to the stereotypical flag-waving crowd and recalls authoritarian regimes like North Korea. One critic points out, “Surely the best way to make people feel patriotic is by having a strong economy, affordable living, and young people able to pursue careers without drowning in debt. Patriotism can’t be forced by displays alone – you can’t eat a flag.”

What’s Next for Reform UK?

Reform needs bigger ideas if they want real traction in 2029. Flag displays and lessons aren’t going to cut it for everyone. But it’s clear this party is staking its reputation on stirring up national pride – one Union Jack at a time.
