The A31 through the New Forest remains closed in both directions following the major wildfire, with motorists warned there is still no confirmed date or time for the road to reopen.

National Highways teams are continuing extensive repairs after the fire caused substantially more damage to the road and surrounding infrastructure than was initially apparent.

Work is expected to continue into the weekend. While there are hopes the A31 could reopen during the weekend, this has not yet been guaranteed and will depend on the completion of remaining safety-critical work.

Resurfacing has now been completed and new safety barriers installed, but teams are continuing to replace at least 1,500 metres of boundary fencing.

The fencing is particularly important in the New Forest because it prevents free-roaming livestock from gaining access to the carriageway.

Temporary protection is also required around bridge parapets damaged by the fire.

Narrow lanes and 50mph limit expected

When the A31 does eventually reopen, motorists are expected to face temporary restrictions while permanent repairs are arranged.

National Highways has previously indicated that narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit are likely to be introduced.

The current closures are:

  • Westbound: M27 Junction 2 at Ower to the A338 at Ringwood
  • Eastbound: A338 at Ringwood to M27 Junction 1 at Cadnam

Drivers should continue following the signed diversion via the A326, A35, A3060 and A338 until National Highways confirms the road has reopened.

Motorists are being urged not to rely on satnavs directing them along minor New Forest roads or through communities including Hale and Linwood.

The smaller roads are unsuitable for large volumes of diverted traffic and are also used by walkers, cyclists, horse riders and free-roaming livestock.

New Forest fire no longer a major incident

The wildfire itself is no longer classified as a Major Incident, but the affected area remains unsafe.

Forestry England continues to assess the damage and oversee recovery work, while car parks and routes surrounding the fire ground remain closed.

Members of the public are being asked to respect barriers and warning signs and stay away from closed areas.

Restrictions on barbecues, campfires, camping stoves and other naked flames across the New Forest also remain in force.

The prolonged closure continues to cause significant disruption for residents, businesses and visitors.

National Highways teams are working around the clock, with a further announcement expected once a confirmed reopening plan can be provided.
