Brave Call Handler Calms Domestic Abuse Victim and Kids in Crisis
Gia Fulker was on duty in the Kent Police Force Control Room (FCR) just before 11am on 12 March 2022 when she got a chilling call from a Canterbury woman. The distressed caller had barricaded herself and her young children in a room after officers popped by to check on her welfare.
Calm in the Chaos
The woman, a victim of domestic abuse and terrified of men, was panicking. Gia sprang into action, using her calm voice and expert negotiation skills to soothe her. She coached the frightened mum through breathing exercises, working patiently for around 30 minutes until the woman finally calmed down and engaged with the officers outside, who were then able to offer vital support.
Top Praise from Police Chief
“I am incredibly impressed with the professionalism and compassion shown by Gia on this call,” said Chief Inspector Lee Cheesman. “Her quick thinking and kindness safeguarded two young children in a frightening situation they didn’t understand. Gia went beyond her training with patience and care. I want to commend her efforts.”
