Heroic RNLI Lifeboat Crew Rescue Three Stranded Kayakers on River Medway

In a nail-biting rescue, the Sheerness RNLI lifeboat crew saved three kayakers caught in treacherous tides on the River Medway near the Isle of Grain on Saturday, April 6. The drama kicked off at 3.20pm when one kayaker capsized and struggled in the cold water, triggering an urgent coastguard alert.

Rescue Mission in Cold, Rough Waters

The inshore lifeboat raced to Half Acre Creek, where brave volunteers hauled the overturned kayaker from the biting river waters. Meanwhile, a coastguard helicopter swooped in, airlifting the man to hospital for emergency treatment.

Paul Jarvis, Sheerness RNLI Coxswain, described the rescue as a “classic case of wrong area, wrong time, and wrong conditions.” He revealed the kayakers were caught off guard by fierce southwesterly winds blowing at force six to seven against a falling tide. “Some team members were inexperienced for such challenging conditions,” Jarvis added.

RNLI Praised for Lifesaving Expertise

This dramatic rescue highlights the vital work of the RNLI and their highly trained volunteer crews who know the local waterways inside out. Jarvis expressed relief at the successful outcome, crediting the team’s swift skills for preventing a potential tragedy.

Safety Warning for Water Adventurers

Following the incident, RNLI urged the public to always check weather and tide conditions before setting out on the water. They recommend seeking advice from local sailing and watersports groups to avoid dangerous surprises.

With the Environment Agency recently issuing flood alerts for the Kent coast and tidal River Medway—including Aylesford, Larkfield, Wouldham, the Medway Towns, and the Isle of Grain—residents are reminded to stay alert near rivers and coasts.
