From Sunshine to Storms: Met Office Issues Weather Warning
After basking in the warmest spring temperatures for over 50 years, the UK is bracing for a brutal weather U-turn. The Met Office has warned of hail, thunderstorms, and up to nine hours of heavy rain sweeping across large parts of the country this Sunday.
Following a sunny spell with highs of 21°C, forecasters predict persistent downpours, thunder, and hail, especially across southern and eastern England. Londoners should prepare for up to nine hours of rain starting Sunday afternoon.
Heavy Showers and Flood Warnings Hit Southern England
“Heavy showers have developed across eastern England, with some hail and thunder mixed in,” the Met Office said. Travellers are urged to be cautious due to risks of localised flooding.
A flood warning has been issued for Bourne Valley near Salisbury, along with 18 other alerts across the UK.
Thunderstorms are already rumbling with lightning striking North London around 3pm Saturday.
Met Office Warns of Surface Water and Travel Chaos
Met Office meteorologist Ellie Glaisyer warned, “Heavy and thundery showers with some hail are expected. Surface water issues and localised flooding are likely.”
Cloudy, wet conditions will dominate the weekend, plunging the country into a sharp contrast with the sun-soaked scenes seen earlier this week.
Wet Weather Hits Scotland and Northern England
Showery rain will continue across Scotland and northern England with thick cloud rolling in along eastern coasts. Meteorologist Aidan McGivern said:
“A damp night is expected for Scotland and parts of North West England, with low cloud affecting eastern coasts. The greatest threat of showers will be central UK, but Wales and southern Scotland won’t escape.”
He also warned of “slow-moving, lively showers” hitting the Midlands, East Anglia, southern England, and South Wales on Sunday afternoon.
Mild Temperatures Amid Stormy Skies
Despite the storms, temperatures will stay mild, with highs around 17°C in London and southern England. Northern and eastern areas may feel cooler thanks to a breeze from the North Sea.
This wild weather follows the hottest spring equinox since 1972, when London’s Northolt and Surrey’s Chertsey saw a sizzling 21.3°C on Thursday.
