A shocking attack in South Shields today saw a police officer slashed with a blade during an arrest. The suspect, just 25, was quickly grabbed by officers after the brutal assault.
Blade Attack Sparks Alarm in South Shields
Northumbria Police revealed the drama unfolded just before 12:35pm on King Street. Two officers on patrol spotted a man acting suspiciously and moved in. Suddenly, the man lunged, slashing one officer’s face with a bladed weapon.
Officer Hospitalised but Out of Danger
The injured officer was rushed to hospital with cuts to his face. Police confirmed his injuries are minor, and he is stable. The attacker was arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm and is currently in custody.
Police Boost Patrols to Reassure Public
“We are aware of concerns in the community and on social media relating to this incident,” said a Northumbria Police spokesperson. “An increased police presence remains in the town centre to offer reassurance. There is no wider risk to the public.”
