Two Men Arrested in Newham After Police Assault
Two men have been arrested in Newham following a violent attack on police officers that left two injured and needing hospital treatment. The shocking incident happened around 4.30pm on Thursday, 16 August, when officers from the Met’s Violent Crime Task Force stopped a suspicious vehicle on 1 Road, E12.
Struggle Erupts During Police Stop
The officers approached the two men in the car. When the men got out, a fierce struggle broke out. During the altercation, a female officer suffered a broken bone in her right hand, while a male colleague sustained ligament damage to his hand and now requires surgery.
Armed Threats and Ongoing Search for Weapon
The suspects allegedly threatened the officers with what is believed to be a firearm. A 25-year-old was arrested at the scene. His companion, 23, fled but was later caught after a search of nearby gardens on 1 Road, E13.
No weapon has been recovered yet. Police continue a thorough search for the suspected firearm.
Met Officers Praised for Bravery
“This incident once again demonstrates the bravery of Met officers, who have acted with the utmost professionalism in a difficult situation,” said Detective Superintendent Sean Yates of the Violent Crime Task Force.
“Acting on instinct when approaching a suspicious car, they were confronted with two aggressive men who intimated they were armed. The officers put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public.”
