Seven Hospitalised After Suspected Contaminated Sleeping Pills
Seven people have been rushed to North Tees General Hospital after taking the popular sleeping drug Zopiclone. Authorities fear a “potentially contaminated batch” is to blame, sparking serious safety concerns.
One Man Dead, Police Launch Investigation
Cleveland Police were alerted on Friday following reports of adults falling ill after ingesting Zopiclone. Tragically, one man has died, believed to have taken the same batch. Police have issued a stark warning to anyone using the drug, urging caution over the risky batch.
How Zopiclone Works and The Risks
Zopiclone is prescribed for severe insomnia. It works by boosting gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, helping users relax and sleep through the night. Normally given in tablet form, it can also be prescribed as a liquid.
Alcohol Danger and Dependency Risks
The NHS warns against drinking alcohol while on Zopiclone, as it can cause dangerous sedation. Long-term use is risky too, with dependency a real concern. Doctors usually limit prescriptions to two to four weeks to avoid tolerance and reduced effectiveness.
