New Chief Constable Scott Chilton Returns to Lead Hampshire Police

From Rookie to Chief: A Full Circle Career

Scott Chilton, 49, is back where it all began. Starting as an 18-year-old beat cop, he has clocked 31 years in policing. Over 16 of those years, he worked as a detective and climbed the ranks to strategic leadership roles. Most recently, he was chief constable in Dorset and the national lead for investigations.

Community At The Core of Policing

“Having strong bonds with our local communities is the bedrock of policing,” said Chilton. “People want to feel connected to their local officers and safe in their streets. That’s my focus.”

He vows to chase down criminals relentlessly and ensure top-notch investigations. “Kindness and compassion will be at the heart of how we support victims while making sure offenders face justice,” Chilton added.

Local Man, Local Mission

Chilton isn’t just the new Chief Constable – he’s also a Hampshire resident. “I share your expectations personally and professionally. I’m committed to keeping Hampshire and the Isle of Wight safe for all,” he said.

At his appointment panel, Chilton stressed the need for visible local policing and neighbourhood teams connected to their communities, focusing on the crimes that matter most.

Backing from the Top

Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones welcomed Chilton’s return with open arms. “Scott brings vast experience, and I’m thrilled he’s back to lead our force into a new era,” she said.

Jones highlighted their shared plan to boost visible neighbourhood policing, promising named local bobbies in every community by April 2024. “Our mission is clear — to make Hampshire and the Isle of Wight the safest places to live and visit.”

“With Scott at the helm, we’ll reduce crime, increase police presence, and deliver tough justice for offenders. That’s what the public demands, and I’m confident he’ll deliver,” Jones concluded.
