Man Killed by Police Car Racing to Emergency in Birmingham

A man in his 40s has tragically died after being hit by a police car responding to a 999 call in Birmingham. The fatal crash happened just before 7pm on Wednesday, March 19, on Yardley Road in Acocks Green, near Florence Road.

Emergency Response Ends in Tragedy

West Midlands Police say the marked patrol vehicle was rushing to a report of a man armed with a knife on nearby Warwick Road—around a mile from the collision site. Despite ambulance crews arriving swiftly, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A man has sadly died after a collision involving a police car and a pedestrian in Birmingham tonight. The marked police vehicle was responding to a 999 call relating to a report of a man carrying knives on Warwick Road in Acocks Green at the time of the collision,” a police spokesperson confirmed.

Family Supported as Investigation Underway

The deceased man’s family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers. Both police officers in the vehicle escaped injury.

Yardley Road remains shut in both directions between Oxford Road and The Avenue. Bus services 11A and 11C are being diverted while collision investigators comb the scene for clues.

Police Appeal for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage

Officers are urging anyone who saw the crash or has dashcam footage to get in touch. Quote log number 4726 of March 19 when contacting West Midlands Police via live chat on their website or by calling 101.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been notified and will decide if a full investigation is needed, as per standard procedure in police contact incidents.

Meanwhile, officers who responded to the original 999 knife report found no evidence of weapons or disturbance at the scene.

The area is still cordoned off as investigations continue into the tragic crash.
