A man had a pulse-racing shock when he dug up a live hand grenade buried in his back garden on Queens Avenue this week.
Live WW2 Mills Grenade Unearthed in Garden
While digging up a bush on Wednesday afternoon, the resident struck a mysterious metal object just inches beneath the soil. Closer inspection revealed it was a Second World War Mills grenade, a classic British explosive from the 1940s.
Bomb Squad Called In for Controlled Explosion
The man acted fast, alerting police who quickly arrived on the scene. Specialists from a bomb disposal unit were brought in to safely remove the grenade. They transported it away from the home and carried out a controlled explosion to destroy the deadly relic.

Unearthing unexploded wartime bombs isn’t unheard of in the UK, especially during gardening or construction.
- Police urge: do not move any suspicious items.
