Tragic Crash Claims Life of World Champion Glider Pilot Kay Draper
World champion glider pilot Kay Draper has tragically died in a powered glider crash near Basingstoke. Draper, a celebrated member of the British hang gliding team, lost control shortly after takeoff from Lasham Airfield this lunchtime.
Champion Pilot’s Career Cut Short
Kay Draper was a trailblazer in women’s gliding. She joined the sport in 1979 and pioneered Britain’s success by helping win the first Women’s European and World Hang Gliding Championships. Draper took to gliders in 1996, competing from 1999 onward. She flew alongside her husband, David, who was also a British team member.
Fatal Crash Near Preston Candover
Police confirmed Draper died after her powered glider broke apart over a cornfield near Southwood Farm, Preston Candover, just after 11:30am.
Witnesses reported a strange noise from the glider before it suddenly plummeted from the sky. Fire crews arrived swiftly but could not save her. The aircraft, which had a small backup engine, was badly damaged on impact.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
Authorities are investigating the incident under “Operation Pollen.” They urge anyone with information to contact Hampshire Police on 101, quoting the operation name.
