Sheffield Man Jailed for Seven Years After Fatal Birthday Punch
A 20-year-old has been locked up for seven years after a single punch to the head killed a man celebrating his birthday in Sheffield.
Birthday Bash Turned Deadly
On July 15, 2023, 56-year-old Richard Wheeler was enjoying his birthday with friends near The Bessemer pub on Orchard Lane, Sheffield city centre. That’s when Liam Jones, 20, struck him once, leaving Wheeler unconscious with a serious brain injury.
Emergency crews raced to the scene, but tragedy struck — Wheeler died from his injuries ten days later on July 25.
Caught on Camera and Sentenced
CCTV footage caught the shocking incident from start to finish. Jones was arrested just three minutes away from where the attack happened.
On December 8, 2023, he appeared at Sheffield Crown Court and was sentenced to seven years behind bars. Afterward, Jones must serve another three years on licence.
Guilty Pleas and a Police Promise
Jones had already pleaded guilty in November to manslaughter, two counts of grievous bodily harm, actual bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon, and affray.
“While no sentence can ever compensate for their loss, we hope this brings some justice,” said Det. Insp. Adam Watkinson, who led the investigation. “We will continue to track down violent offenders in South Yorkshire to protect our communities.”
Family Speak Out
Wheeler’s family released a heartfelt statement after the sentencing. They asked for privacy as they grieve, describing Rich as “deeply loved and well-liked” and mourning the manner of his death.
“His spirit will always be with us,” they said, remembering him fondly despite the heartbreak.
