Bin Bag Bandit Busted After Bumbling Petrol Station Robbery
David Lafferty’s attempt to hide his identity with a black bin bag spectacularly backfired during a botched robbery at a Sutton-in-Ashfield garage.
Masked Marauder Demands Cash, Drops Change in Dashing Escape
Lafferty stormed into the Huthwaite Road garage, clutching an object that staff feared was a gun. He forced a terrified employee to empty the till into a bag he carried. The haul included around £400, coins and all.
But things quickly went downhill. As he bolted from the garage, the masked thug tripped, scattering change across the petrol station forecourt. In the chaos, he ditched his black bin bag mask on the pavement and fled towards Lammas Road.
Forensic Evidence Nails ‘Bin Bag Bandit’
Police recovered the bin bag and a cigarette butt from the scene. CCTV footage showed the suspect smoking just before the heist. Investigators matched a distinctive tattoo on Lafferty’s hand to descriptions of the robber and found his DNA on both items.
Robbery Rap for Lafferty – Jailed for Four and a Half Years
The 43-year-old initially denied involvement but later pleaded guilty. He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on 14 July, landing four years and six months behind bars at HMP Ranby.
Detective Constable Adam Penn said: “Lafferty showed complete disregard for the law by robbing a petrol station and putting a staff member through a terrifying ordeal, pretending to have a gun.
“Our officers and forensic team worked tirelessly, leaving no stone unturned to link Lafferty to this appalling crime and make sure he faced justice.
“This sentence sends a clear warning to anyone thinking of robbery – we take these crimes seriously and punishment will follow.”
