Mohammed Youssaf sent to jail for 30 months
Mohammed Youssaf has been locked up for 30 months after ploughing into 18-year-old Newcastle University student Emma Guilbert as she crossed the road in Fenham back in November 2018.
Speeding at more than 40mph in a 30mph zone
Newcastle Crown Court heard the 33-year-old was speeding down Wingrove Road, hitting Emma on a pedestrian crossing at over 40mph — well above the 30mph limit. The force of the impact hurled Emma’s lifeless body over 36 metres down the road.
Fled the scene, leaving victim to die
Instead of stopping, Youssaf sped off in his Peugeot 307, abandoning Emma in the street. Witnesses rushed to her aid and called an ambulance, but sadly Emma died three days later in hospital.
Claims of emergency calls don’t add up
Youssaf later surrendered himself and said he tried calling 999 three times, but the calls failed. Police revealed the calls were misdialled and then manually deleted from his phone.
He denied causing death by dangerous driving, admitting only careless driving. However, a jury convicted him of the more serious charge.
Youssaf, from Wingrove Road, Fenham, was also banned from driving for 51 months, starting after his release from prison.
