Hero Cops Chase Armed Suspect Through Scunthorpe
Last July 27, four brave police officers and a dog handler confronted danger head-on in Scunthorpe town centre. PC Gary Kendrew, PC Harry Taylor, PC Zach Meadows, and dog handler PC Chris Grady were on patrol when things turned serious.
Suspect Opens Fire – Cop Narrowly Escapes Bullet
PC Meadows spotted a suspicious man and suspected he’d try to flee into a nearby property. As the chase began, PC Meadows activated his body cam to keep colleagues updated in real time. Suddenly, the suspect stopped, pulled out a handgun, and fired at PC Meadows. Miraculously, the bullet missed.
The man had already demonstrated that he was not afraid to fire a gun at a police officer, so it is to their enormous credit that they proactively continued the pursuit without knowing whether he would do so again,” said Police Federation Chair Lee Sims.
Daring Pursuit Ends with Armed Man Caught
Despite the danger, PC Meadows pressed on. PC Grady and his police dog, PD Xander, soon joined the hunt. The suspect climbed onto a roof and squeezed into a neighbour’s home, trying to escape via the front door. With children’s toys spotted inside, officers feared a hostage situation.
They stormed the property, tracked down the man, and arrested him—still unsure if he was still armed. He later pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life.
National Police Bravery Award Nominees
Lee Sims praised the squad: “They showed incredible bravery and were adamant this individual wouldn’t harm innocent people or their colleagues.”
For their fearless actions, PCs Kendrew, Taylor, Meadows, Grady, and PD Xander are now nominees for the prestigious National Police Bravery Awards. They will attend a special ceremony in July alongside other UK heroes recognised for exceptional courage on and off duty.
